MacGregor has identified a lot of potential to improve the efficiency of cargo flow and load handling within the global maritime industry. While embarking on numerous in-house projects, MacGregor is inviting the stakeholders to co-create a more sustainable future together. To boost innovation in this area, MacGregor organises a CargoHack hackathon at the Interschalt Marine Center near Hamburg, Germany in November 2016. Hack the Sea with MacGregor is a part of the CargoHack hackathon series to boost the development of intelligent cargo handling in the world. The goal of the hack is to explore and experiment new opportunities to reduce waste in the maritime industry.

MacGregor has identified a lot of unnecessary waste in the form of inefficiencies, outdated practices, damage to cargo and dangerous working conditions for shipboard crew and stevedores within cargo flow and load handling. Three key areas contain a lot of potential to reduce this waste: efficiency, safety and environment, and therefore the challenges of Hack the Sea have been built around them.
- Safety: Increasing safety on vessels
In this challenge we are seeking answers on how to increase safety at seas and harbors. How could we understand better where people are positioned on a vessel and who is onboard based on indoor-positioning, cameras or other technologies? How could we increase situation awareness by combining sensor-data from different vessels, i.e. solving the weather-window problem and creating a local picture for weather conditions based on sensor data? How can the new technologies like VR,AR or others be used to mitigate and prevent accidents for personnel and equipment in lifting operations at shore and offshore in harsh sea environment? Could the use of behavioral data and open data open new opportunities for increasing maritime safety? We would like to understand what kind services we could develop to make the marine environment a safer place to work.
- Efficiency: Increasing fleet efficiency through optimised maintenance of installed products
In this challenge we are seeking to increase efficiency by optimising ship’s maintenance. How could we optimise and increase the efficiency of a ship utilising real-time data and a better view of installed base of products? How could we monitor the installed base of MacGregor products in a real-time interface to see where our fleet of products are located? How could we predict the need for service engineers at the right ports and create new innovative ways to operate? We would like to understand better, how we can develop consulting services to our customers to make their ships more productive.
- Environment: better tools for customers to access information about vessel sustainability
In this challenge we are seeking to develop tools that would give information about ship’s sustainability. How could we follow and track that the vessels are used at their optimum? Can we identify training opportunities for the ship’s crew based on data? Could we utilise not only machine data but also open data and behavioral data. According to research by UCL Energy Institute (UCL) and Carbon War Room (CWR), vessels with high design efficiency leave millions in the pockets of fuel payers. However, the operators are not driving old vessels any other way than driving the more efficient vessels. Read more at www.shippingefficiency.org. We would like to understand what kind of services we could develop to help operators to drive more eco-efficiently.
- The participating teams are provided with data from various relevant sources, and simulators are available to support the development and demonstrations of the concepts.
- The simulation platforms are used to visualize the challenges of cargo handling onboard, and they also allow experiencing how it feels to steer the vessel in various weather conditions on the ship deck at our training center.
- Data from vessel operations and engine room will be provided as well as an opportunity to utilize any open data source, such as weather data.
- The event partners will provide tools and platforms to support the development, e.g. Samsung smart phones, smart watches, tablets, VR headsets, AR glasses, together with IBM Watson and Bluemix services.
A number of industry experts from MacGregor and event partner organizations will be coaching and supporting the teams as mentors, to help the participants in understanding the industry characteristics, business and challenges, as well as how new concepts can be developed quickly.
A more detailed list of available resources and descriptions of the interfaces, data content, simulation environments and other available systems will be provided before the event to the teams.
The winning team will get 10 000 euros.
Product prizes will be given to best tech demo, the best out-of-the-box idea, and best team chosen by mentors.
At least one of the best participating teams will be offered to deliver a pilot project right after the event, to take the hackathon results further towards commercialization.
The hackathon will be organised at the Interschalt Marine Center near Hamburg in Schenefeld, Germany. There will be transportation arranged from central Hamburg on Friday November 11th at 11:30 to the event premises, as well as transportation back to Hamburg on Sunday right after the event. MacGregor will take good care of the participants and provides e.g. accommodation, meals and social programme throughout the event. Accommodation will be organised in a hotel near the event facilities.Travel costs to Hamburg are to be covered by the participants.
Who will own my idea?
IPR for any software codebase or documents produced during the competition will stay with the team, even though ideas themselves cannot be copied. The event host reserves the right to use the presentation material generated by the teams in the event (documents, slides, videos etc. presenting and illustrating the idea) for external and internal communication of the hackathon results. The host has the first right of refusal for 30 days after the hackathon to negotiate further collaboration with the team to purchase or continue working on the project initiated.
Apply with a team of 2-3 people. All applications will be reviewed after the deadline and all applicants will be informed one week after the deadline. 12 teams will be selected to join the hackathon.
