Hack the Factory

with Ponsse

Inspired by the successful “Hack the Harvester” event, Ponsse organizes a new hack that seeks ideas and solutions for Lean material and information flow, and for boosting performance of Ponsse’s factory and Supplier Village. Ponsse also wants to connect with companies and people who can help realize both continuous and breakthrough improvements at the factory and in the supply chain.

Challenges

  1. Material and information flows between Ponsse and the supplier village
Ponsse’s supplier village is tightly located next to the factory, but could be closer in terms of integrated processes. How could we make the process leaner, decrease waste and increase information about material flows with the supplier village companies?
  2. Material flows in production
The production of Ponsse is based on lean manufacturing and just-in-time delivery of parts. How could we improve and streamline material flow, for example by increasing transparency of material availability, better support of internal logistics, following part movements, and easily ordering and providing right parts to right place at the right time? Could e.g. data analysis, visualisation or new ways of sharing information provide solutions to this?
  3. Data collection from production
How could we automate data collection from production system, processes and orders, e.g., working time, status of production processes, equipment and orders, and disturbances in the factory? We are also interested in new instruments, so feel free to bring your own sensors as well!
  4. Providing real-time data for production personnel and management
Getting real-time information and better view on overall status of the production system, processes and orders are important for both production managers and production personnel. These support production operations, planning and management, and enable Ponsse’s people to be happy, successful and innovative in their daily work. What kind of devices and services could we use to make relevant information easily available to production personnel and management?

What is the goal?

The hack seeks prototypes and ideas for seamless, Lean material and information flow that provides “right material and information at the right time to the right place in a right way” within the Ponsse factory and Supplier Village. Visibility of supply chain, tracking and tracing of orders, automated data collection, and providing relevant, real-time information at the factory and Supplier Village are important elements and objectives. The overall aim is to ensure safety and quality of operations and to boost productivity of the factory and the supply chain. Furthermore, we look for ideas and solutions that enable Ponsse’s people to enjoy their daily work and to be successful and innovative in it.

Ponsse also wants to connect with people and companies with whom co-operation can be continued in improving the systems, operations and performance of the Ponsse factory and Supplier Village.
