Ponsse Plc is one of the world’s largest manufacturers of cut-to-length forest machines. The roots of the family-owned company, grown from a machine entrepreneur’s dream into an international export company, lie deep in the Finnish countryside. The company is still based in Vieremä, in the same location in which it was founded in 1970. Ponsse operates in 40 countries and almost 80 per cent of its turnover from exports. The company’s turnover in 2020 was about 640 million euros.
Ponsse is known for its innovative product development, which has been awarded with e.g. the international Red Dot design award. In Finland Ponsse has been nominated as the company with the best reputation, leaving behind the likes of KONE and Supercell.
“This was way better than I could have imagined – even though everything was organized 100% remotely”
– Kalle Einola, Manager, Technology, Product Safety & IPR, Ponsse Plc
In the forestry industry, there was a specific challenge that hadn’t been solved for decades. Ponsse wanted to explore the topic from new angles with the help of their own people. A co-creation process resembling a challenge contest was organized as part of the PONSSE Innovation Lab, and representatives of Ponsse personnel from different continents and timezones gathered together to innovate during a few days period. 10 teams were selected to join the co-creation, which was designed and facilitated to support creative problem solving and concept development between the teams and expert mentors.
As a result of our collaboration, ten solution concepts were created by the Ponsse staff, leading to six invention disclosures right after.
