Congratulations to the eight teams selected to join the Challenge!
KEKO is a consortium of Nokia, Kone, YIT, Caverion, Halton, VTT and Netox with a mission to make every building smart. The members are creating a dynamic ecosystem by bringing together major players and SME’s around a smart building platform with a human approach. By developing this platform, KEKO pursues to enable new platform-based business models for founders and participants, more comfortable buildings with better experience and services for users, and thus improved value and sustainability for building owners.
In KEKO’s visions, future workplaces and offices are supported by smart buildings that seamlessly adapt to various needs and create added value by being more human-centric, while utilizing more and more data and technology. KEKO members aim to design and build a smart building platform creating new and unique experiences to add value for every building user in their everyday life. This holistic, cross-industry approach allows KEKO to bring together domain expertise and data for example from building construction, material and people flow, energy consumption, building usage and indoor positioning into a unique, purpose-built API.
The series of KEKO innovation challenges map solutions and developers that can take the platform a step closer towards making buildings smart. We aim to find some of the first concrete experiments, partners and solution concepts in building the KEKO ecosystem and the technological solutions needed to enable the future workplaces and offices.
The workplace is changing. The nature of work evolves as we spend more time remotely and less at our dedicated desks at the office. This means a lot of new freedom, variability and flexibility for the individual, but also less predictability and more versatile demands for the office building itself and its workspaces. Most recently, Covid-19 pandemic has probably permanently changed the way we work and see our offices. It has also brought a whole new dimension to health and cleanliness of the office as our demands for hygiene have risen.
Offices must adapt and evolve to keep us more safe and healthy, whether it means social distancing or other support for safer individual behavior, or advanced hygiene on all aspects of the physical building. We believe that the data collected by smart buildings could also be utilized for this purpose.
Through this innovation challenge, KEKO wants to explore potential solutions that could support and improve the health security of buildings. We are hoping to see data-enabled solutions that could e.g.
- Measure hygiene levels and identify potential health risks
- Guide people towards more hygienic and safe behavior
- Make hygiene levels and actions taken more transparent, thus increasing people’s feeling of safety
We are looking for companies who could design, implement and provide such solutions as part of the future ecosystem of a smart building – solutions either existing or completely new. They should utilize Maria01 as a testbed but in the future be scalable also to other types of spaces than office buildings. Ideally, they would offer additional value for the users of the building (as opposed to just serving the property management). Suggested solutions should address not just the value for the users, but also the technical implementation and the business model through which they would be delivered for the users, with the KEKO platform as an enabler.
To help the teams during the challenge, the host has reserved some key people (mentors) and resources to support your work. Teams will receive login info to the KEKO platform for developers (read more about it on the KEKO website) and access to the data available on the platform.
In this challenge, Maria01 offers a testbed for the solutions. At the KEKO developer website you can find information about the sensors already installed. More detailed information can be shared by request and with the selected teams during the challenge.
With your expertise and feedback, this challenge will also help KEKO develop the platform, its APIs and data sources. We also encourage you to check out open data or utilize your own data, as we are eager to learn if some other sources could leverage the service and the platform in the future.

Who can apply
Apply with a team of 2-3 people, ideally combining diverse skills and backgrounds in the team. The team must represent a company or other such entity that can drive the design and implementation of their solution during and after the Challenge. Teams formed as a collaboration among multiple companies are welcome, but the contract signing party should be named already in the application. All applications will be reviewed after the deadline and all applicants will be informed after the deadline. 8-12 teams will be selected to join the challenge. You may only apply by submitting the Industryhack web form.
Expected commitment for selected teams
During the challenge, the teams will develop and conceptualise their suggested solutions together with Host’s mentors. The teams are expected, in minimum, to work on the challenge during the co-creation phase by investing an estimated 3 days of their time per team member. The aim of the contest is to find one or two relevant concepts that can be validated in the proof-of-concept phase. The team that is chosen to the proof-of-concept project will be paid the agreed budget to deliver the project.
The challenge will be organised under Industryhack Terms of Participation v20210112. The poc project’s agreement will be made with Industryhack’s poc agreement template, in accordance with the spirit of the terms mentioned above. Team selection criteria
Applications will be evaluated based on team composition, initial approach and contribution to the combination of selected teams. The following criteria will be used to identify 8-12 teams with best potential to succeed in co-creating and proposing an interesting solution.
- Depth and variety of skills and experience relevant to the challenge
- Team’s motivation and ability to work together
- Team’s motivation and ability to partner with the host
- The relevance and maturity of the team’s preliminary ideas, solution or approach
- Correct understanding of the challenge
- Alignment with KEKO’s goals and the challenge
- Participating teams will be chosen so that the approaches and team compositions complement each other and represent a variety of viewpoints to the challenge
Each team that is selected to the co-creation phase will be paid a reward of 1500 eur for taking part in the challenge. Rewards are paid against invoice after the team has presented their solution at the end of camp and provided their materials and feedback after the camp. After the co-creation, the best team(s) chosen by the jury are expected to work on their technical demos in small proof-of-concept projects (5000 euro budget), building and testing the concept technically with the KEKO platform. The best 1-2 teams may further continue the collaboration into a second proof-of-concept project to validate the business model and the desirability of the solution for the users, with a budget of 20-50 000 euros as agreed between the team and KEKO.
