Helen is looking for partners with whom to experiment better and more sustainable data-based energy management as a service for their property managing customers

Opportunity in a nutshell

In return, your team invests an estimated 5-6 working days (per team member) into co-creating an interesting solution proposal and finding mutual ground for a partnership with the host.

Host introduction

Helen is one of the largest energy companies in Finland, founded in 1909, producing electricity, heat and cooling in production plants mainly located in Helsinki. Over 90% of buildings in Helsinki are connected to Helen’s district heating network. This combined with Helen’s other energy services gives Helen a unique position and possibility to combine data from different systems to serve one customer.

Helen constantly develops more efficient ways to produce, store and recycle energy, and aims for a climate-neutral energy system. Together with its customers, Helen builds a greener and more sustainable future through reduced and optimized energy consumption, and is not afraid of making bold moves or offering a fresh perspective in the property management industry.

Challenge Introduction

Through this Innovation Challenge, Helen aims to find partners with whom to experiment better and more sustainable energy management as a service for their property managing customers.  Together with these partners, Helen wants to offer a comprehensive, integrated or automated customer experience combining different data sources – both those of Helen and those of the partner (or other sources) – in a novel way. Helen would like to see not only improved and diverse utilization of their own data, but specifically to find value-adding data sources from unexpected angles.

The goal is to empower the property manager to take more control of the property and its energy, accountability, sustainability and good condition with a seamless service that makes their work easier, saves time and lets them focus on the value-adding actions of their daily business. For the property manager, this kind of smart energy management service could be either fully automated, delivered by Helen’s or their partner’s experts, a combination of all these, or it could recommend actions for property managers to implement by themselves and by their partners. We believe property managers would benefit hugely from better insights and actionable recommendations, and some would  be very interested in fully automated property management processes. Scaling the solution to other customer segments (tenants, consumers, industry) is also an interesting option for the future. An ideal approach would be flexible and adaptive to different users, use cases and data sets. 

We are now welcoming potential partners whose expertise, understanding of the property management industry, data (either its own, others’ enriched or open data), possible existing or future solutions or even customers/users, could complement Helen’s data and service experience. Ideally, this would be the start of a collaboration in which the combination of Helen and the partners’ data, service and customer insights could together bring an innovative new business logic or value proposition to the market.  Are you the right partner, and what could you and Helen offer for the property manager together to drive the future of energy?

An innovation challenge is also a chance to learn and Helen is especially interested in learning how to be an interesting partner, and what more they could do to attract new partners in their ecosystem. As this challenge has a strong focus on data as an enabler, it’s also a good chance for Helen to estimate the quality of their existing data sources and APIs pragmatically, to improve the building blocks of their future service ecosystem.

Available Resources

To help the teams during the challenge, the host has reserved some key people (mentors) and resources to support your work. There will be Helen’s experts on their digital services, data, integrations and property management services available for sparring. Participating teams will receive an introduction to Helen’s current state of services and data, and data sets needed for designing your solution can be delivered per request.

Timeline

  • Applications deadline: September 17th 16:00 (EEST)
  • Applicants informed about the selections: September 25th
  • Briefing Session (mandatory for all team members): October 1st 15-17 online (live attendance to the event is also possible (but not mandatory) depending on covid-19 restrictions of the time)
  • Co-creation Days (mandatory for all team members): October 7th, 8th and 21st (full days, 9-17) online (live attendance to the event is also possible (but not mandatory) depending on covid-19 restrictions of the time)
  • Proof-of-concept phase kickoff (mandatory for the best team(s) chosen by jury) – TBD

Rules of Engagement

Who can apply

Apply with a team of 2-3 people, ideally combining diverse skills and backgrounds in the team. The team must represent a company or other such entity that can drive the design and implementation of their solution during and after the Challenge. All applications will be reviewed and all applicants will be informed after the deadline. 3-8 teams will be selected to join the challenge. You may only apply by submitting the Industryhack web form.

 

Expected commitment for selected teams

During the challenge, the teams will develop and conceptualise their suggested solutions together with Host’s mentors. The teams are expected, in minimum, to work full-time on the challenge during the kickoff event (0,5 days) and co-creation camp (3 days), and invest an estimated 1-2 days of time in between. The aim of the contest is to find one or two relevant concepts that can be validated in the proof-of-concept phase. The team that is chosen to the proof-of-concept project will be paid the agreed budget to deliver the project.

 

Terms of participation

The challenge will be organised under Industryhack Terms of Participation (version 20200820). The poc project’s agreement will be made with Industryhack’s poc agreement template, in accordance with the spirit of the terms mentioned above. The template will be shared with the winning team(s).

Team selection criteria

Applications will be evaluated based on team composition, initial approach and contribution to the combination of selected teams. The following criteria will be used to identify 3-8 teams with best potential to succeed in co-creating and proposing an interesting solution.

Team composition:

  • Depth and variety of skills and experience relevant to the challenge
  • Team’s motivation and ability to work together
  • Team’s motivation and ability to partner with the host

Initial approach:

  • Team’s preliminary ideas or selected approach for solving the challenge
  • Correct understanding of the challenge

Contribution to the mix:

  • Participating teams will be chosen so that the approaches and team compositions complement each other and represent a variety of viewpoints to the challenge

 

Rewards

Each team that is selected to the co-creation camp will be paid a reward of 3000 eur for taking part in the challenge. Rewards are paid against invoice after the team has presented their solution at the end of camp and provided their materials and feedback after the camp. After the camp, the best team(s) chosen by the jury are expected to work on their proof-of-concept (POC) project, building and testing the POC together with the host. The project will have a budget of ~20 000 euros paid by the host. More detailed scope and cost of the project are designed during the camp and in the POC project’s kickoff.
